Collection Instructions

Specimen:Cervical or urethral discharge, endometrium, semen, urine, fetal tissue, placenta. Lower respiratory: Lung biopsy or aspirate, trachea; endotrachea or bronchial aspirate, pleural fluid in newborns or severely immunocompromised patients.
Container:BD Universal Transport Media
Collection Instructions:
  • Urine and other body fluids may be collected in a sterile container.
  • Sterile tissue and endotracheal tubing should be placed in UTM transport media to prevent drying. Do not use M4-RT.

If a swab is used for collection of specimen, it should be placed immediately in UTM transport media, agitate the swab in the medium, express the fluid against the side of the vial and discard the swab.
Causes for Rejection:Urine received in grey top transport container, M4-RT (room temperature) transport media, tissue or endotracheal tubing not received in M4/UTM transport media.
