Special Instructions:Sample is pH dependent. Methemoglobin may revert to hemoglobin on standing. Ideally, test is performed within 2 hours of collection; up to 10% decrease may occur after 4 hours, up to a 16% decrease after 8 hours.


Collection Instructions

Specimen:Blood (arterial, venous, capillary)
Optimal Volume:1 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.5 mL (3 mL syringe); 0.2 mL (tuberculin syringe); 0.1 mL (capillary tube)
Container:St Johns/Woodwinds - Dry heparin syringe, Dry heparin syringe
Alternate Containers: Capillary (lithium heparin) gas tube, Green (lithium heparin, no gel), Green (lithium heparin, no gel) on ICE, Green (sodium heparin, no gel), Green (sodium heparin, no gel) on ICE
Collection Instructions:Sample should be free of air bubbles. If collecting in green (heparin) tube, do not remove stopper. Deliver to the laboratory immediately; if received within 20 minutes, ice is not required.
Causes for Rejection:Gross lipemia; presence of >1% sulfhemoglobin, >60 mg/L methylene blue or citrate.

Shipping Instructions:Ship on wet ice to arrive within 8 hours, preferably 2 hours.
