Urine Collection Procedure

Collection Instructions

Specimen:Urine, timed collection (12 to 24 hour; 2-12 hour collections are acceptable but not recommended)
Optimal Volume:Submit entire collection; analysis requires 0.2 mL
Container:3 L plastic jug
Collection Instructions:Refrigerate during collection. IVP dye does not interfere with sample analysis.
Patient Preparation:The patient should continue good hydration and avoid cooked meat, coffee, tea, or drugs (especially cephalotoxin and other cephalosporins) throughout the collection period.
Causes for Rejection:No serum creatinine collected; collection not timed.

Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Mix collection well before aliquot is taken. Centrifuge specimens containing cells or precipitate. Aliquot 1 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:Acceptable preservatives: HCl, or boric acid. Results should be inspected for consistency, assuming a normal collection should contain 1 g creat/24 hour. Collection on ice preferred; but not required. A clearance will be accepted and reported on patients whose serum creatinine is normal and has been collected within 72 hours of the urine collection. SI Unit Conversion Factor: clearance (mL/min) x 0.01667 = clearance (mL/s)
Test Performed at or Referral Lab Chemistry  (Fairview Range - FRMC, UMMC-East Bank, Fairview Lakes - FLMC, Fairview Ridges - FRH, Fairview Northland - FNMC, Fairview Southdale - FSH, UMMC/UMMCH-West Bank, M Health Clinic and Surgery Center)

Reference Range:

Standard Clearance

(calibrated to IDMS)

100-160 mL/min/1.73m2

110-180 mL/min/1.73m2

The calculation for standard creatinine clearance in mL/min =urine volume/minute x urine creatinine/serum creatinine x 1.73/surface area of body in m2. Body surface area is obtained using the DuBois formula (see below) which require height and weight.

       BSA = 0.007184 x weight (kg) 0.425 x height (m) 0.725

Normal ranges for children less than one year of age are not well established. Ranges seem to be lower than those of older patients.

Use:Evaluate renal function.
