Collection Instructions

Specimen:Urine, timed collection (12 to 24 hour; 2-12 hour collections are acceptable but not recommended)
Optimal Volume:Submit entire collection; analysis requires 0.2 mL
Container:3 L plastic jug
Collection Instructions:
  • Refrigerate during collection.
  • Collection on ice preferred, but not required.
  • IVP dye does not interfere with sample analysis.
  • Acceptable preservatives: HCl, or boric acid.
Patient Preparation:The patient should continue good hydration and avoid cooked meat, coffee, tea, or drugs (especially cephalotoxin and other cephalosporins) throughout the collection period.
Causes for Rejection:No serum creatinine collected; collection not timed.

*The calculation for standard creatinine clearance in mL/min =urine volume/minute x urine creatinine/serum creatinine x 1.73/surface area of body in m2. Body surface area is obtained using the DuBois formula (see below) which requires height and weight.
*BSA = 0.007184 x weight (kg) 0.425 x height (m) 0.725
*Normal ranges for children less than one year of age are not well established. Ranges seem to be lower than those of older patients.   * SI Unit Conversion Factor: clearance (mL/min) x 0.01667 = clearance (mL/s)

Results should be inspected for consistency, assuming a normal collection should contain 1 g creat/24 hour.
Use:Evaluate renal function.
