Collection Instructions

Specimen:CSF
Optimal Volume:1.25 mL
Minimum\Peds Volume:0.2 mL
Container:Sterile tube (Plastic leakproof container, sterile)
Collection Instructions:Number the tubes to indicate the sequence of collection. Transport to laboratory immediately. For interpretation, plasma glucose is also needed. Ideally, collect blood specimen two hours (equilibration time) prior to lumbar puncture.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Centrifuge specimens containing cells at room temperature. Aliquot 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Store in refrigerator.
Shipping Instructions:Ship at refrigerated temperature.
Stability:8 hours at room temperature; 72 hours refrigerated

Interpretive

Critical Range:Less than 40 mg/dL
Reference Range:St Johns/St Joseph/Woodwinds: 40-75 mg/dL
Grand Itasca: 40-80 mg/dL
All other sites: 40-70 mg/dL
CSF glucose concentrations are about 60% of normal plasma glucose.
