Collection Instructions
Specimen: | CSF |
Optimal Volume: | 1.25 mL |
Minimum\Peds Volume: | 0.2 mL |
Collection Instructions: | Chemistry Tests Containers Chart
Number the tubes to indicate the sequence of collection. Transport to laboratory immediately. For interpretation, plasma glucose is also needed. Ideally, collect blood specimen two hours (equilibration time) prior to lumbar puncture. |
Causes for Rejection: | Specimen not received in lab within 2 hours of collection. |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: | Sample must arrive within 2 hours of collection. Centrifuge specimens containing cells at room temperature. Aliquot 1.25 mL, 0.2 mL minimum. Analyze immediately. |
Shipping Instructions: | Ship at refrigerated temperature. |
Stability: | Roche: N/A
Cerebrospinal fluid may be contaminated with bacteria and often contains other cellular constituents. CSF samples should therefore be analyzed for glucose immediately. |
Test Performed at or Referral Lab | Chemistry (Roche-Grand Itasca, Roche-Lakes, Roche-Northland, Roche-Range, Roche-Ridges, Roche-Southdale, Roche-St. John's, Roche-UMMC East, Roche-UMMC West, Woodwinds) |
Interpretive
Critical Range: | Less than 40 mg/dL |
Reference Range: | Woodwinds: 40-75 mg/dL
All other sites: 40-70 mg/dL CSF glucose concentrations are about 60% of normal plasma glucose. |
