Patient Preparation: | A number of drugs affect uric acid excretion; positive interferences may be caused by caffeine and theophylline. Drugs to avoid include aspirin and other anti-inflammatory preparations, x-ray contrast agents, vitamin C and warfarin. |
Processing and Shipping
Specimen Processing: | Mix collection well before aliquot is taken. Aliquot 5 mL, 1 mL minimum. Store at room temperature.
Refrigeration of the specimen may result in precipitation of uric acid, which must be re-dissolved by warming slightly (50C) before aliquoting. |
