Reference Range:
Greater than or equal to 1.1 AI is considered positive for Epstein-Barr Viral Capsid antigen IgM. A negative test does not exclude current Epstein-Barr infection. Abnormally high levels of IgG and rheumatoid factor could cause occasional false positive results.
0.8 AI or less Negative - No detectable antibodies
0.9-1.0 AI Equivocal - Please recollect
1.1 AI or greater Positive - Suggests current or recent infection
Note: The magnitude of the result above the cut-off is not indicative of the amount of antibody present. Antibody index (AI) values reflect qualitative changes in antibody concentration that cannot be directly associated with clinical condition or disease state.
Use:EBV IgM antibodies appear 1-6 weeks after the onset of disease and may persist for 3-6 months. These antibodies are considered specific for the diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis.
