Collection Instructions

Specimen:Feces
Optimal Volume:5 mL liquid specimen or solid specimen
Minimum\Peds Volume:1 mL liquid or pea-sized solid specimen
Container:Plastic leakproof container, sterile
Collection Instructions:Usually this test is requested on a liquid specimen.
Contraindications:Barium procedures and laxatives should be avoided for one week prior to collection of specimen.


Processing and Shipping

Specimen Processing:Store in freezer.
Shipping Instructions:Ship on dry ice.
Stability:Specimen should be frozen if testing cannot be completed within one hour of collection. Refer to Reducing Substances and pH, Qualitative, Feces.

Interpretive

Reference Range:
Normal diet Neutral to slightly alkaline (pH 7.0-7.5)
Breast fed infants slightly acidic
Bottle fed infants neutral to slightly alkaline
